SURGERY FOR ULCERATIVE COLITISNewer procedures like restorative proctocolectomy which include formation of pouch and ileoanal anastamosis have changed the outlook for patients with ulcerative colitis. Now patients can get rid of the disease (Ulcerative colitis) by surgery with intact anal passage . They do not need a permanent ileostomy. Here the diseased colon is removed and a pouch of small intestine is made and joined to the anal passage. Patient gets rid of the disease, is able to stop all medications including steroids.
